Call Now For Deal of the Day and Other Specials

Over the years, I’d started seeing a ton of self storage near me. Facility after facility started popping up in what felt like random places. Sometimes, it was on the outskirts of town whereas other places seemed like they were right in the middle of the action. I’ve even seen a few self storage places that have multiple stories, which seems nutty but when the only place you’ve got to move is up, I guess it makes sense.

I remember years ago when storage units started being advertised as being available to be placed on your front yard. This way, you could fill them up (as many you wanted even), and a service would move them for you wherever your new destination was. This was ideal for folks moving long distances, but just the notion of such a service being offered was mind-blowing.

Without saying as much, I made a little promise to myself that I’d never rent a self storage unit for any reason. Why? I didn’t see the need for it. The way I saw it, if you managed your personal items correctly, you’d have everything you needed and nothing extra. It sounds practical and reasonable, but it also doesn’t take into account one important factor — life.

Life happens, and with it comes ‘stuff’. Whether it’s in the form of emotional baggage or just a bunch of extra things you’ve got to put somewhere, ‘stuff’ becomes a part of your life. Needless to say, the last five years of my life have been chockfull of ‘stuff’. That meant that I had a few (!) estates worth of documents and belongings in my garage, attic, mudroom, and any other available spot. In fact, I found it hard to find the things that were MINE.

Choosing self storage wasn’t easy. It came down to understanding a few things:

House Was Too Full

As I mentioned, my house was full of other people’s belongings. There were even boxes labeled ‘Bills 1963-1970’ and they weren’t talking about the football team. I needed to get this stuff out. Also, I’ve had my home for many years, with the wall décor & furniture chosen for the space. I didn’t want to keep compromising MY space.

Understanding My Home’s Environment

Because some of the ‘stuff’ I had was sensitive in nature, I knew that I had to protect it. My home’s humidity can shift quite a bit during the year, which can wreak havoc on certain materials. The last thing I wanted to have happen is for something to be destroyed due to poor climate control on my property.

A Temporary Measure

Contrary to what some people think, having a self storage unit isn’t forever. They’re designed to be temporary. Once I wrapped my brain around that, I realized just how beneficial a climate-controlled self storage unit could be in my situation.

Was self storage near me the right call? Yes. Is it the right call for everyone? That will depend. The important thing to remember is that you need to have perspective. Ultimately, at least for me, it proved to be one of the best decisions I could’ve made because I know all that ‘stuff’ is well-protected AND I’ve got my home back.
